This set is an intense build and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. There are lots of small pieces and many, many pages of instructions. In additional to putting all of the pieces together you'll need to run the tubing for the pneumatic system. Most of the instructions are clear, but there were times when I had to study an illustration for a while to figure out what they were trying to explain. There are no words, just images. The entire build took about 4 hours split over 3 days for two adult men to complete.
Once assembled the Forest Machine is large, brightly colored, and definitely has that mechanical LEGO Technic look and feel to it. It's sturdy when assembled and rolls smoothly. There is a small rubber steering wheel on the middle of the Forest Machine that allows you to pivot it as the center for making turns. It's not the smooths steering system, but it works. The cab rotates almost 360 degrees and all of the large rubber wheels pivot up and down. There are lots of fun little details such as a toolbox, coffee mug, thermos, and chainsaw that add whimsy to the set.
The pneumatic system is powered by 6 AA batteries, which are not included. The batteries power the pump that is supposed to lift and lower the tree grabber, and open and close the arms. There are two rotating wheels to operate those functions. Unfortunately on my unit the pneumatic system to open and close the arms doesn't work at all and the up and down motion works begrudgingly. I checked to make sure everything was assembled properly and that the batteries were good, but I still had no proper operation despite the power light being on.
All in all... hard to build, even harder to get working.
