What is Vacuum Insulation?
Vacuum means the air between the outer and inner layers of stainless steel has been removed to create a vacuum insulation. It blocks heat from transferring through air (conduction). Zojirushi vacuum insulation also features a copper or aluminum layer tightly wrapped around the outside of the inner stainless steel layer. This copper or aluminum layer reflects heat (radiation), further minimizing the temperature change of your drink. Lastly, heat is blocked from escaping through the opening (convection) with a tightly closed lid.

Product Description
Zojirushi began in Japan in 1918 as a manufacturer of hand-blown vacuum bottles. They are still known today for their high quality vacuum insulated products. This stainless steel food jar is vacuum insulated so it keeps foods (or beverages) hot or cold for hours. Durable and sanitary 18/8 stainless steel construction will not rust, tarnish or stain, and will not leak harmful chemicals. The interior is polished stainless steel with a nonstick coating and is neutral to taste and smell. Tight -fitted lid has a gasket that seals lid to minimize leaks and maximize heat retention. It has a unique lid designed with a vent that allows users to release the pressure inside to make the lid easier to open when the food jar contains hot foods or beverages. A wide opening of 2 and one half inches makes it easy to fill and clean and allows user to eat directly out of the jar. Great for holding hot meals, soups, oatmeal, cold desserts and much more

Today I filled this thermos with a can of tomato soup at 3am, at 1045am I opened it and it was still warm. My backpack was covered in ice and frost and everything was freezing cold. If you have a normal job in normal temps (it’s 22f here right now), and work normal hours this will serve you perfectly.
Also if you’re a monster like me who enjoys condensed soups this will fit a full can of condensed Campbells soup.
I’m so happy I bought this thermos, its build quality looks good as well but it’s too new for me to make any calls on that yet.

I am disappointed by how strongly the lid components retain food odors. Even if I take the whole lid apart and soak the parts in vinegar and dish soap, they still smell like the soup I had in the thermos.
I can still recommend the thermos for its functionality, I just wish the lid materials didn’t absorb odor.
I’m a little concerned about the longevity of the lid gasket since I remove it for cleaning each time, but too soon to evaluate.
The Thermos brand was first and I sent it right back for refund and ordered the Stanley. It was only slightly better, so I returned it as well and tried the Zojirushi. Neither held heat like the Zojirushi and each were prepped the same with scalding hot water for 15 minutes before filling with hot food.
At about 7 hours after filling, the Zojirushi was so much better than the others. I didn't need to reheat my food from the Zojirushi, but it was necessary with the other two.
There is no way I will pay a higher price for products that don't perform as advertised.
So one thing I do notice is this jar feels and looks higher quality than my other jars. Not substantially so, because I think the Maxso and the Stanley are close, but this thing looks super nice. The polished still interior is beautiful and the handle feels great.
Like every other food jar I bought, I put boiling water in it and took temperature every hour or two (or eight, when I go to bed).
Simply put, this performed better than the ~$15 Hydrapeak 18oz (Zojirushi was at 122 after 14 hours compared to 104 for the Hydrapeak) and slightly better than the Hydra Gear 25oz I bought from TJ Maxx for $11 (was at 118 after 14 hours) But it did worse than all my 24oz jars. The Maxso and Stanley did the best at around 140-145 at this point, and the DaCool was around 135.
Crucially, all of these jars are cheaper than the Zojirushi. My recommendation is to purchase the Maxso. It was $5+ cheaper than the Zojirushi, looks and feels REALLY nice (very close in quality to the Zojirushi), has a built in bowl and spoon, and has much more capacity despite not being much physically bigger.
This is a really nice food jar! That's why I gave it 5 stars. I just think it's worth spending less for something better.

I thought it would be a great idea to fatty the thermos and see if it actually worked. I cook salmon with a bit of rice and vegetables the night before work. I microwave it at home the morning just before leaving. I would say it keeps food hotter than warm but it’s not piping hot it’s just right.6 hours later.
