My First Treadmill

My First Treadmill
I've had the Nautilus T614 Treadmill for about a week now (as of 9/2/16) and am satisfied with it for the most part. This is my first home treadmill so can't compare it to others except for ones I've used at the gym which wouldn't be a fair comparison at this price point. I bought it through Amazon for ~ $800 and feel that is plenty for this machine, can't believe it was originally ~$1500, I would expect more for that price but maybe that's just lack of knowledge of this type of equipment. It's a nice looking machine and is solid and sturdy. I had it professionally assembled so can't comment personally on putting it together, it's very heavy though so I wouldn't recommend doing it by yourself. It folds up, not very compactly but enough to make room on the floor and vacuum underneath it. It has wheel so you can move it but I find it impossible to move by myself, especially the way it's described in the instructions on how to move it and especially for someone my size, which is 5'7" and ~ 135 lbs -- definitely a 2 person job for me which is not what I had expected (they make it sound so easy!) but I guess that's reality for this size machine so I'm okay with it.The built-in fan has three speed settings, or at least I'm guessing because they all feel the same to me lol. You can also adjust the vent up and down. Overall though the fan is pretty much useless because it does not provide a strong enough airflow for me to even feel. The cord provided to plug in a music player, my iPhone in my case, may not fit in the jack on your phone/music player if you have a protective case on it, so that is disappointing considering that most people these days use their phone as their primary/only music player and usually have a protective cover on it.The cushioning in the strike zone feels a little more firm than I would like, we'll see if it softens up over time. Also I tend to run a little more forward on the treadway and the cushioned strike zone is more in the middle so I have to move back a little bit to find the sweet spot. The length of the treadway is 55" and is fine for me although the width of 20", while adequate, does feel a little narrow and I now appreciate the bigger ones at the gym that have ample room. Anyway, this will take some getting used to.You can save up to 4 user profiles which is nice. The couple of preset programs I've used have been great and I can further customize them to my desired incline/speed settings throughout the workout. I wish I could saved my customized workouts...I don't know if I'm able to or not at this point, will have to look it up in the manual, but there's no obviously way to do it looking at the display screen.I find the noise level of the machine to be acceptable, it's neither super quite nor excessively loud. I'd love to try a treadmill with a more powerful motor to compare the noise levels.Overall it's a good first home treadmill, with an nice range of incline and speed settings and preset programs for a decent price. I probably would have spent the little bit extra money for the T616 but it wouldn't have shipped for 1-2 months and I wanted one NOW! Lol

So far, this treadmill is as good as I expected. And I expected it to be very good. I have now completed 4 runs (4 miles each; 6.2-6.5 mph). Everything is great: Deck provides a nice cushioned run, as others have commented. Treadmill is very quiet. Definitely has a solid, gym-like feel to it. Speed & Incline motors work just fine. When I bought it, Amazon offered a no-charge assembly by local professionals, which I took advantage of. They did an excellent job - the two folks arrived just when they said they would, and had the job completed in under an hour. Not sure they've assembled this particular model before, but it was obvious they've assembled plenty of others and knew what they were doing. They gave me a quick overview of the machine and some helpful hints. So, for the price of a nice tip (I hope they thought it was a nice one!), I avoided all the potential hassles of assembly. Others have said it wasn't that hard, and since I repaired my old one a bunch of times I'm sure I could have done it without huge issues, but it certainly would have taken me several hours at least, and who knows how much aggravation. I have an A/V setup in the room, so have not used the speakers (nor do I expect to). The fan is actually better than I expected, but I already have a big fan in the room anyway so that's not much of an issue. And I don't use custom workout programs much, so can't offer feedback on those. My old machine lasted 17 yrs (Keys Encore EC1500), being used pretty much every other day. I did do a number of repairs over the years, but must say it performed very well. And since its warranty, specs and overall 'solidness' were not as good as this new Nautilus machine, I'm expecting even more from this one! I came close to buying the LifeSpan TR1200i, which had very similar specs and reviews, but a better warranty. But just before I bought, the LifeSpan went up over $100, so it made my decision easy (the Nautilus was $799 plus tax, the LifeSpan at the time was $849...and I see the LifeSpan has now gone up even more, to $999). To me they seemed very comparable. Another interesting note: I paid the same $799 for my Keys in 1999...and so, on the surface at least, it seems one gets quite a bit more bang for the buck today. Delivery: was very fast, and very professional. They brought it in inside the back door. From there it was pretty easy for two of us to slide it along tile & wood floors to the 'exercise room'. But if you've got to carry it up or down a lot of stairs - well, let's just say I would not want to do that.

Treadmill was delivered in a large cardboard box and the young delivery man helped me carry it into the room that me and my wife wanted it set up. This package weighs 200 lbs, it is not easy to carry and is the hardest part of "assembly." If you are contemplating having it delivered into your garage or entryway or a room, I highly suggest having it delivered exactly where you want it unless you have some help to move this thing around. Once I had the package in the room I started opening the box, removing parts and disposing of the garbage as I went to help keep things clear. The base of the treadmill comes as one section and was somewhat difficult getting out of the box (might suggest using two people for that.) Once I had all the parts out I started assembling - it was actually fairly easy and the instructions were clear enough to get it in one shot. I assembled by myself, but could have used two people for a few key parts. But overall, this was a fairly easy assembly.

I plugged it in and everything worked! I've had a chance to use the treadmill a handful of times now and it works great! It doesn't feel cheap and I have not felt the belt slip at all. I highly suggest this treadmill if you are looking for a quality machine but at a fair price.

After owning this treadmill for 19 months I am updating my review.

Update after owning for a year and a half.

A few weeks ago after logging about 1500 miles and 375 hours of use I have had my first issues with the TM. As I was working out the speed started to increase and decrease suddenly and erratically about a half a mile per hour. This was a little unnerving to say the least. The next day the same thing happened again. The problem went away but came back last week. This time the treadmill stopped dead in it tracks. Could be worse if it had decided to jump to 10 mile per hour that fast. Have not had a chance to speak with customer support yet. Electronic parts are still under warranty but not labor. If my experience with Nautilus on getting this fixed is significant one way or another I will report back.

Update. Looks like the problem was with the speed sensor and the motor pulley wheel. Technician told me to set the gap between the sensor and the pulley wheel to the thickness of a business card. Since doing this three weeks ago I have only had one very brief instance of a speed change. Nautilus also sent me a new sensor and cable, in the event the adjustment did not fix the problem. I will add that Nuatilus has been very helpful with all the issues I have had.

My review will will cover two areas. Assembly and use.

This is my third treadmill. My last one gave up after 4500 miles and 1122 hours of use. So I have some experience in assembling treadmills. Before receiving the treadmill I downloaded and read the manual which I recommend to everyone. The manual that comes with the machine only covers assembly and not how to use the machine. While the manual recommends that you have two people assemble the machine I was able to do it by myself in about one hour and fifteen minutes. Reading the assembly instructions before starting helped with the time. If you have a second person available I also recommend. It will speed things up. The printed manual could have larger drawings but having the digital version handy allowed for the zooming in on those areas where I needed more detail. This treadmill does not skimp on ruggedness. It is more substantial than my previous one. I had a few setbacks in the assembly which required me to undo a couple of steps to make corrections. What I appreciated most about the T614 is that as much of the assembly that can be done and allow for the most practical shipping is done at the factory. My last treadmill had me assemble things that could have delivered completed. From my experience in treadmill assembly this was the easiest one so far. If you are concerned about having to assemble your treadmill, Nautilus makes it as easy as possible.

Now to using the machine. I have one week under my belt on the new machine. For my purposes the display is very good at displaying all the information you will want to see. It is back lit so if you are in a darker space no additional light is needed to use. I do not use any of the pre-programs that typically come with machines. The manual refers to custom programs but does not go into any detail as to how to create one. I attempted to figure this out but all it seems to do is let you store a single incline and speed, which is not of great benefit. In speaking with customer service they did not have more info to offer. One short coming regarding the use is the delay in changes that you make to speed or incline. For example when you increase or decrease the speed the machine, probably as a safety feature, it is slow to respond. That is fine but on the display the reading gets confusing. It switches between the current speed and the set speed which can appear that the speed is actually slowing down when speeding up. It would be better if the new speed setting just flashed until the speed was reached. The built in fan is fine but not going to do much to keep you cool. I wear headphones when using the machine so I have not tried the built in speakers. My last treadmill was to noisy for using the built in speakers. The T614 is definitely quieter so they may provide enough volume to be functional. My iPad Air 2 fits perfectly in the space provided and sits up high to allow a better angle for your head. This machine is larger than my last one and is about a big as my space allows. One thing to be aware of. This machine has to sit further away from the wall because when the machine is folded into the storage position the deck actually moves forward. It seems counter intuitive but I positioned the machine against my wall in the upright position and placed it as close as I could. When lowered there is about an 18” gap.

I am curious to see if this treadmill will get me the same amount of use as my last one. If anything significant arises in my future us I will edit my review. I would recommend this treadmill to others.
