1. Easy of use: I found it much easier to move around in this program than in TurboTax. One of my pet peeves with Turbo Tax, is that if you want to go back through a section, it would take you through a long series of questions all over again. Making matters even more annoying, some of those questions required a yes/no answer to move on and TurboTax didn't remember your last response, making you reread and rethink your answer when all you want to do it move on, making no changes. H&R Block reduces the number of such questioning pages by giving you a list of items that might apply to you that you check off and only addressing those questions. Also, it remembers your responses, so repeating a series of questions is easy....just keep pressing 'Next'.
2. Accuracy: I have IRA accounts in which I have a large basis (already taxed money deposited in those IRAs). I'd totally forgotten about it when I began taking out RMDs (required minimum withdrawals) from those accounts. This is my 4th year of RMD withdrawals. H&R Block software (Deluxe version) asked about any basis I have in RMDs and when I marked off that I did, it took me through completion of the Form 8606 needed to recoup the proper proportion of RMD income that is not subject to income tax. Realizing I'd been missing out, I have now gone back to Turbo Tax Deluxe for 2016-2018 to create amended returns to account for this. It was not easy to do in the Deluxe version. I had to know what form to go after. When I did, Turbo Tax warned me that I should upgrade to the Premiere version to get better support. I was able to complete the amended returns in the Deluxe versions, but I am quite angry that Turbo Tax never even addressed the possibility that I might have a basis in my IRA RMDs. If I were still using Turbo Tax this year, I'd be missing out again. And, I am within a month of the time limit to amend my 2016 return.
3. Cost: Even better, H&R Block Deluxe version is much cheaper than Turbo Tax Deluxe and way, way cheaper than Turbo Tax Premiere!
Like many reviewers, we switched to Tax Cut/H&R Block tax prep software following the TurboTax price gouge. In past editions, Tax Cut/H&R Block has been easy-to-use and accurate, with a functional (if basic) user interface. Now, however, because of some frustrating glitches, we may switch back to TurboTax next tax year (also, TurboTax has been getting cheaper, particularly if you buy from a warehouse Big Box store, or go for Amazon's digital download when on discount).
User Interface: why still so "basic" and unfriendly to older eyes? The blocks for entering data are unnecessarily small and cramped. Likewise, the font for entering data is cramped and smallish.
This Year's Return: when opening the software program, I have to--every time!--navigate manually to the 2019 file I'm using?! I'm sure this wasn't the case for tax year 2018.
Importing past data: this year's software didn't/couldn't import all of our past data, particularly some info from our 2018 Federal Sched A. Irritatingly, trying to manually enter that data ALWAYS resulted in an "alert." Fortunately, I was able to file this year's Federal return with that open "alert."
RMD: we didn't turn 70 1/2 in 2019, but this year's (2019) software can't make that computation. This also comes with an "infinite loop" of "alerts" that can't be dismissed, even if you manually enter "$0" for Required Minimum Distribution.
Dialogue Box info: our tax situation hasn't changed for several years (retired). But, I frequently read through most of the "additional information" boxes, just because I'm interested in taxes. This year's software is skimpy on information, and many of the information boxes refer to IRS publications, WITHOUT a link to the referenced pub. In the past, many of those pubs were hot-linked.
In sum, the mid-January version of H&R Block's 2019 tax prep software isn't nearly as "good" as past versions. Its user interface remains unnecessarily cramped. There seems to be cost-savings going on by NOT ensuring the 2019 version is either glitch-free nor feature-rich. It's frustrating to be unable to manually dismiss erroneous "alerts." Not as confident with the Quality-Control of this year's version of H&R Block, though it is certainly a decent value, price-wise. However, I'd rather feel self-assured with the software, and will consider returning to TurboTax for next tax year.
