For me, using TurboTax each year brings continuity, ease of use, familiarity and reliability. My taxes aren't complex and I could do them myself, but it's worth it to me to have TurboTax lead me through each potential issue. I'd be happier if capital gains and Losses (!) were included in the less expensive version, but it is what it is.
The price of the software compared to my tax owed or refunded is usually insignificant, and I appreciate the contintuity of data from one year to the next.
TurboTax does a good job of auto-populating fields that rely upon previous tax years.

I’m a tax accountant, but I don’t prepare returns as part of my practice. TurboTax is strictly for our own personal use. A few notes. The less-expensive online TT stores your personal tax data in Intuit’s cloud. I prefer to keep all of my work products and data encrypted on my MacBook, with an encrypted backup through Mac’s Time Machine. I do not trust Intuit with my data, period, so I’m willing to pay more to install the program and maintain the data locally. The forms side of TT is not easy to navigate, and is also due for a reorganization and redesign. I frequently override some of the form entries based on my knowledge of the tax code. I prefer to enter information as I want rather than go through the narrative from start to finish, and unfortunately, if you have a year or two where you don’t use TT, you cannot import your data to start off your return. For example, we used another accountant for two particularly complex years, and TT didn’t recognize the TT file from three years ago to import data. Frustrating, but not a common situation.
Importing data from banks and payroll companies is fair - not great. TurboTax does not support uploading spreadsheets, text, or PDF files which is a shame. It would be so helpful to be able to import a PDF of a W-2 or 1099, or a spreadsheet (or txt file) of charitable contributions or business expenses. Like I said, the software is due for a serious update. It’s also poorly laid out - for example, car mileage and tolls should be together so that the information entered for small business is consistent with use for rental realty/passive activities, charity, and medical. Instead, each time you’re prompted for commuting miles vs. business vs. other use, which if your travel logs and records aren’t straightforward, can lead to incorrect or inconsistent information in the same return - and final check doesn’t pick that up.
Avoid TT’s up selling of other versions. We used Premier to handle two Sch C small businesses and Sch E rental property/passive activities (including related forms for home office, equipment depreciation, use of personal vehicle, and Sch SE) as well as receipt of K-1s. I believe all versions handle Sch A itemized deductions, Sch B dividends and interest, Sch D capital gains/losses (and related forms) as well as the new ugly 1040 with multiple sub forms. The transition to State tax works well - we file in one state, though I’ve done multi-state with TT in the past easily. There is no reason to purchase a TT version higher than Premier unless you are filing for an estate or trust, corporation, or partnership (Sch K and issuing K-1s). I also don’t believe you can use TT to issue 1099-MISCs, which is too bad as the regs require 1099 filing at a lower threshold not indexed to inflation.
In short, TurboTax is the best, most consistent, relatively bug-free version tax software for home use. ANYONE can use it to file their returns, regardless of their knowledge of tax law. Support options are fairly good during tax season, import works okay but needs to be expanded to allow txt, pdf, and csv files. There’s far too much up-selling, but Intuit has always been guilty of that. One suggestion - after filing, save a copy of your entire return and worksheets as a PDF. It’s nearly impossible to access your TT data from prior years, and old TT versions often don’t work on new operating systems. And please, keep your tax data off the cloud!!
Gets checkboxes vs. radio buttons wrong.
ASKS you whether a sale is a wash sale. (It's too stupid to figure it out based on the dates.)
Entering investment sale data is EXTREMELY tedious. It's easier to manually fill out an *actual* IRS Form 8949.
Going to Search Topics for "bitcoin" or "cryptocurrency" returns *NO* results. And Bitcoin/cryptocurrency aren't listed as options for the type of investment. In 2019. (Mac/download version)
Going from page to page, you often have to wait a few seconds (while you watch the "Calculating..." message) even though there's either no data to process or the processing should be trivial. This is a big deal since TurboTax leads you through *dozens* to *hundreds* of pages of queries depending on your tax situation, so you wind up waiting on the program, unnecessarily, a LOT. You also get that same stupid delay whenever you delete something extremely simple. I write software; this kind of delay is simply inexcusable.
Did your TXF file import with errors so you'd like to delete the entire import? You wish, this is Turbo Tax! Get ready to manually click "Delete" for each and every transaction (even if there are hundreds of them), watching the stupid "Calculating..." message after each manual delete.
When you're looking at your completed Form 8949, would you like to be able to click one of the values to take you to a place where you could edit it? Of course you would, but because this is Turbo Tax, you can't.
Are you starting to sense a pattern?
Institution name is listed as "No Financial Institution". You'd think that you'd be able to enter the institution name by clicking
the "Edit" button next to that, but you'd be wrong. There's no place to edit the name.
TurboTax is of course too stupid to list more than four decimal places for Bitcoin or other cryptocurrency trades, even if you enter them to eight decimal places. So for very small trades they'll show up in TurboTax as "0 shares". Brilliant.
Want to change the description of a trade? Don't expect to easily do so by clicking the Edit button next to the name. First you have to go through an unnecessary screen asking you what type of investment it is before the program deigns to show you the edit field for the name.
You can tab to the Continue button, and it'll highlight like it's active, but you can't actually press it with the Enter key, you have to mouse over to it. It's sitting there, highlighted in blue, just taunting you like it's actually gonna let you save some time, when it's really not. Same deal on <select> boxes: you can tab to them to highlight them as though you could use the arrow keys to select your option, but in reality, you can't.
IRS Pub. 527 says that you can claim expenses for rental property that's temporarily vacant if you used to rent it previously, but TT won't let you claim the expenses.
There's so much more, I could list PAGES AND PAGES of these problems, which range from annoyances to outright wrong tax treatment.
Welcome to Amateur Hour.
No review of TurboTax would be complete without a mention that they successfully lobbied Congress to prevent the IRS from being able to offer its own, free filing software! Talk about corruption.
