What is the NIOSH Certified Equipment List (CEL)?

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), under authorization of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, provides a testing, approval, and certification program assuring respirators used in the workplace meet the standards of 42 CFR Part 84. Since 1994, NIOSH has maintained a searchable, online version of the Certified Equipment List.

The certified equipment list is a tool to help respirator users, safety managers, industrial hygienists, and others to:

• Determine if the respirator they are currently using or considering using is NIOSH-certified,

• Select the appropriate respirator to protect against the hazard(s) they are exposed to,

• Locate the correct replacement component parts for respirators with chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear protections, and

• Learn what respirators are designed to provide protection from chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear agents, and what manufacturers produce units meeting the NIOSH standards.

The Certified Equipment List is regularly updated as respirators are approved, made obsolete, or the status changes in any way.

Beware if the Box Style
The box on the LEFT we’ve ordered for years and they have been great! The box in the RIGHT contains inferior masks of poor quality- the straps are looser and the mask cup is longer , both resulting in a poor mask seal. Not sure the issue as they are both 3M 8110S - my only thought is they are from different factories…

    The face masks arrived with an awful smell- they have a strong chemical smell. It’s so strong that we couldn’t even try them on our faces longer than a few seconds. It gave me a headache and my eyes were teary. My guess for the smell is cross contamination. I paid $34.56 (purchased them before they went on sale) and contacted Amazon for refund. Amazon said they need to contact the seller. Seller refused to provide refund and didn’t offer an exchange. I’m usually very happy with Amazon, but I wasn’t in this case. We ended up ordering KN95 masks instead and I now have a few N95 masks that a friend gave me, her husband works in healthcare and the masks she gave me are great and don’t have any smell.

    N95 mask -- they aren't comfortable, but they work. Not possible to make them comfortable really -- masks need to fit snug to work. Only complaint is they rubber straps break after about 10 off/on uses. I will use a mask for quite a while if I only wear it for a few minutes going into a store. Boing! the strap breaks. Had to tie in a knot when in the store more than once.

    We purchased these to wear on planes because even though the cabin air is HEPA filtered, it never fails I'm sitting next to someone hacking up a lung. I'm able to get a good seal with this model, and I don't have to worry about the Chinese counterfeit models that the FDA has warned about as 3M is reputable. I've also used these when sanding/woodworking and have had good filtration against wood dust. If it will fit you, I definitely recommend.
