  • WHAT IS PORCELAIN ENAMEL ON CAST IRON. It is glass that becomes bonded to the cast iron at high temperatures. A particulate of glass, called frit, is applied to the cast iron vessel and then baked at temperatures between 1200 and 1400° F. The glass frit melts and fuses to the cast iron, forming a bond. Porcelain enamel on cast iron is heat tolerant and impervious to water and other consumables.
  • EASY TO COOK AND CLEAN: The porcelain enameled interior has a smooth finish that minimizes sticking, promotes caramelization and resists staining. Although enameled cast iron is dishwasher safe, hand washing with warm soapy water and a nylon scrub brush is recommended to keep your Dutch Oven in tip top shape
  • HEAT RETENTION: The cast iron vessel has superior heat distribution and retention, evenly heating throughout both the bottom and sidewalls. Cooking And Caring For Your Lodge Enameled Cast Iron

1. Allow cookware to cool.

2. Although dishwasher safe, hand washing with warm soapy water and a nylon Scrub Brush is recommended to preserve the cookware’s original appearance. Citrus juices and citrus-based cleaners (including some dishwasher detergents) should not be used, as they can dull the exterior gloss.

3. If necessary, use nylon pads or scrapers to remove food residue; metal pads or utensils will scratch or chip porcelain.

4. Slight stains can be removed by rubbing with dampened cloth and Lodge Enamel Cleaner or other ceramic cleaner according to directions on bottle.

5. Dry cookware thoroughly before storing. Do not stack cookware.

Caribbean blue enameled cast iron dutch oven, as you combine the benefits of cast iron with the beauty of porcelain enamel. Creating cookware since 1896, Lodge has a rich history of an unparalleled dedication to quality and technology. This particular piece is perfect for making soups, stews, casseroles, and cobblers with superior heat retention and even heating. The vibrant enamel surface is resistant to acidic and alkaline foods. This Dutch oven is right at home on induction, ceramic, electric, and gas cooktops, even in your oven up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Additionally, this oven can handle colder temperatures for marinating or refrigerating foods. Like traditional cast iron cookware, porcelain enameled cookware starts out being cast in the traditional method. However, after this process, a glass particulate called "frit" is applied and the cookware is baked in ovens between 1200 and 1400 degrees Fahrenheit. This process transforms the frit into a smooth porcelain surface that is bonded to the iron. There is no exposed cast iron on the finished product, the black cooking surface and rims are transformed into matte porcelain. Traditionally shaped and more affordable than some European brands, Lodge Color enameled cast-iron is just as durable, requires no seasoning, and attractively serves at the table. Lodge infuses this 6-quart Dutch oven with two coats of hard-as-nails porcelain enamel, in a choice of several bright colors that are gradated (dark to light) on the exterior, and which are nicely set off by a cream interior. Embellished with concentric circles and a black knob, the lid, which also fits the Lodge Color 11-inch skillet, is oven-safe to 400 degrees F, so you can start a stew or casserole on the stovetop and finish by baking it in the oven. The 6-quart Dutch oven measures 10-3/4 inches in diameter by 4-1/2 inches deep.

Lodge enameled cast iron makes a smart choice due to its versatility--you can marinate raw meats in it, since it won't absorb odors or flavors, and you can braise, saute, simmer, and bake in it as well. Made in China to Lodge's meticulous specifications, each cookware item is first clad in matte black enamel before the color is added. The black rim that shows on the oven is actually the scratch-resistant matte enamel, not the raw cast iron. Though the Dutch oven is dishwasher-safe, washing by hand is recommended to best preserve the glossy finish. Look also for the pricier Lodge Enamel series, with its unique L-shaped lid knob, in a different set of colors and sizes to suit any kitchen. Nice Dutch oven! I did not want to spend $$$Heat is dispersed evenly, did a beautiful sear. Very easy to clean, no scraping. I was a little disappointed to find that Lodge now uses China to manufacture some items. Hence the price. I still feel it will last with proper care.

I just store this in my oven when not using since I have no space in my kitchen. It is a bit heavy but these appliances usually are. Appearance is beautiful, I got the sage one. It performs well, easy use, and mine has no chips- I’ve read reviews that say theirs has. I would say just keep it clean and be careful with it as you would with anything else. My food comes out great! Would recommend, price is really good for what it is in my opinion.

I was getting bombarding by homemade bread making videos on social media and finally decided to buy a Dutch oven. After researching alllll the options, it came down to affordability and durability. When I found this Lodge Dutch oven, I immediately loved the neutral white color and the fact that the top can be baked to high temps too. Even if it doesn’t last me twenty plus years, it has so far proven to be durable and did a great job allowing me to cook a new homemade sourdough bread recipe. Can’t wait to try it for some more non-bread recipes, too. Overall, great product at a great price point!

This review is for the Lodge 6 Quart Enameled Cast Iron Dutch Oven with Lid – Dual Handles – Oven Safe up to 500°.

This is an "initial impressions" review based on my first use of this item. I plan to update this review in a few months after more experience using this item.

First, as a basis for comparison, I should note that I own several pieces of French-made enameled cast iron cookware from Staub, Le Creuset and Made In, as well as some Chinese-made pieces from lesser known brands. This includes three enameled cast iron Dutch ovens in smaller sizes from Staub and Le Creuset. I bought the oldest one of these maybe 25 years ago, and it still looks and works like brand new.

I also recently purchased, used, reviewed - and returned - a highly-rated Chinese-made 6 quart enameled cast iron Dutch oven from another manufacturer, which sells here at Amazon for a similar price to this one. That one was absolutely gorgeous out of the box. But it rusted and stained like crazy with ONE use. Ridiculous. Thus, I returned it.

This one looked very nice out of the box, but not as "pretty" as the one I returned. The enamel seems a bit thin - especially as compared to my French-made Staub and Le Creuset enameled cast iron Dutch ovens. So I have some concerns about long term durability. On the other hand, a similar-capacity French-made enameled cast iron Dutch oven from Staub or Le Creuset would have cost at least three times as much as this Chinese-made item from Lodge. And Lodge is an old, established, company with a hard-earned and well-deserved reputation for quality value-priced cookware.

All that notwithstanding, in its first use the performance of this Dutch oven was outstanding! I slow-cooked a pot of chili with beans and sun-dried tomatoes for several hours on the stove top and it turned out perfect and delicious. The thermal capacity of this beast is truly impressive.

Meanwhile, not a speck of rust . . . which is as it should be. Cleanup was not exactly a breeze, but it wasn't really very hard either. In the end, it looked like it had never been used. Hours cooking a full pot of chili with tomatoes presents quite a challenge to an enameled cast iron Dutch oven - especially one with a white or cream colored interior. However this one stood up to that challenge and met it.

Anyway, so far I am very pleased with this Lodge enameled cast iron Dutch oven. Since this is only an initial impression, and I do have some concerns about the durability of the enamel, at this point I'm only giving it four stars. However I plan to come back here later this year after having used it more extensively and update this review. At that point, I might upgrade it to five stars.

But . . . so far, so good!

So glad I got this. Great value. Great quality. Easy to clean too! It is so versatile as well. I will just say, if keeping the lid on while on stovetop, the handle conducts the heat, but nothing an oven mitt can’t handle and I think the metal used adds to the durability overall. Definitely recommend.
