Update: great customer svc, Does not blend or work like watercolors more like markers
Update- I contacted Arteza- their customer svc was great- they gave me instructions to do a pen test, wish those instructions came with the set to begin with. I copy pasted their instructions to me for you. The Arteza Real Brush Pens are watercolor markers which contain water-based dye ink. They can be used both with & without water. If you plan on using them with water, we recommend using high-quality Watercolor Paper (We love to use our dual-sided 100% Cotton Watercolor Paper). If you intend on using them without any water for dry brush effects, you may use either watercolor or sketch paper. If the ink flow seems low, please place the pen between your palms (tip facing down) and rub your hands together vigorously. The heat and friction will cause the ink to flow to the tip of the brush. There are quite a few different techniques to give a unique look to your art with the Real Brush Pens!

-Go Light to Dark with water! Dip the tip of the brush (about a quarter of the way) directly into the water and then begin to paint on your paper. This method will create a stunning light to dark gradient effect!-Blend, blend, blend! Lay down your color on paper first, then using a water brush pen (or paintbrush) blend the color out. This will create a vibrant watercolor look!-Want to achieve a rougher look? Use the Real Brush Pens without any water for a unique dry brush look. This effect is perfect for giving your pieces a textured look!-Looking for a way to add your unique touch? Take a lighter & a darker color, use the lighter shade to pick up ink from the brush of the darker one (make both tips touch). Paint & be amazed!
-Make even more colors! Mix your colors on a paint palette, once done, use a water brush pen to pick up the ink and paint away!
-Each color layers beautifully onto one another (Go crazy!) :)
-Want to create softer watercolor effects? Lay down your favorite color on a paint palette, then just like with traditional watercolor paint use a water brush pen to pick up the ink and get creative. My test of a set that was defective . Some pens worked great others not so much. But loved Arteza customer svc. They seem to care abt their products and customers. The yellows and some oranges did well, other colors didnt, Arteza said this was NOT typical of their product- they suggested the storage procedure from one of their 3rd party distributors may have caused the problem. They MUST be stored flat or they leak and paint blotchy.!!!! They refunded my $. I may try again from them directly, or if I find in an art store shelved properly. If you expect these pins to work like watercolor, I’m here to tell you that at least mine did not. When you first start to use them they seem a little dry and splotchy. The more you use it the more it flows out. Look at the pictures you can draw very fine line Which I did and turquoise blue and varied the lines thickness. the water brushhas to be filled by squeezing and drawing water up into it. I laid down A wide section of turquoise blue and instantly use the water brush on it the blue would not flow like water color should and no matter how much I went over it. If you use it like markers not expecting them to blend , then they have good merit As you can see with my first attempt on the sunflowers. So keep this in mind when your shading. I don’t know if I got a bad batch or they are all like this. A few of my colors were out of spectrum order almost as though it had been tried by someone else and returned. If I were to try these again I would buy them directly from the manufacture or a store.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great For Beginners!
Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2020
I like these Real Brush Pens! I've been using traditional watercolor for a long time, and I was looking to try some watercolor pens for the first time… However, I didn't want to spend 50-60 bucks for a set, so the price on this 48ct set was what drew me to it! Also, the set comes with one of their water brushes, which I thought was really nice and is the perfect tool to use with these pens.

Again, I've never used watercolor pens before, so I can't really compare with other products.

The wet-on-wet method seems to work best, which is what I prefer, so that is the method of use that I'm basing my review on.

For color washes you can swipe the pen on a glass or porcelain palette, or even an enamel butcher's tray (I'm currently using the glass lid to a piece of dinnerware lol). Then, pick up the color with the water brush… Or, you can generously apply water to the paper and use the pen to add in color…

While the paper is still damp, you can go back over certain areas w/ the pen and get deeper/more vivid areas of color, while using the water brush to blend out the edges.

I'm impressed with the range of colors in the 48ct. It's pretty expansive and definitely appreciated!

The other thing that I really appreciate with the Real Brush Pens is that they're available in open stock! In Arteza's Amazon store, you can get around eighty individual colors in packs of four for about six bucks, which is pretty cool!

On a side note, these are not lettering brush pens, imo, and I would not recommend them for that purpose. If you're new to watercolor or brush pens, play around with the water vs. color ratio and just give yourself time to experiment and figure out what technique works best for you, before starting a piece!

I'm curious to try some of the higher priced brands, too see how they compare, but all in all, I think that this is a really nice product and a good value for the price!

5.0 out of 5 stars Curious and Delightful!
Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2019
These are not the Real Brush Pens you’re looking for......They’re Much More!
I’ve been eyeballing these Real Brush Pens by Arteza for almost 2 years now trying to convince myself that I could find something similar elsewhere and for cheaper. Let me tell you, nothing I’ve found compares to these strange cuties.
Key points:
1. They play well with water but it requires some imagination. (Using a blending sheet, dipping or running the brush tip onto a wetted area to create color blossoms for a wet on wet effect or giving a quick swipe with a wet brush.) The last technique of adding water with a brush will vary in success as some pigments won’t budge easily if the paper is too absorbent.
2. I believe these brush pens have been engineered in such a way as to simulate watercolor without the need of additional water. In fact some pens even disperse ink just like a brush freshly loaded with paint and water. It’s trippy and I love it!
3. These cool pens have a secret that is only revealed under the right amount of water dispersion....They color shift!!! I’ve seen teal green have a shadow of aqua and forest as well as walnut brown echo a lighter truffle and reddish brown once the ink dispersed into water.
4. Lastly, you can create super fine lines or robust calligraphy strokes but go slowly unless you like some chaos in your style....which works too.
So in summery.....These are unique Real Brush Pens and while it’s tempting to go for a similar brand for lesser money I doubt you’ll find the quality and charm Arteza has put into these lil dudes. The brushes are robust and can hold a shape, the barrel is thick enough to provide ergonomic comfort to your hand and lastly the ink is vibrant and richly pigmented. Check them out and be creative...art is fun when it’s unpredictable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vibrant Colors & Easy to Use
Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2021
Pretty easy for beginners! I've never done water color before, and these sheets were my first attempt with these brushes. None were dry! Some of them (especially the lighter colors) are harder to blend out. The water brush is useful, but smaller than it appears in photos. I only had to fill it once though for the entirety of these pages, and it's still relatively full. The blending is not so bad! I think the markers blend well, I just need to practice more to get the streaks out. They do, however, dry relatively quickly. I would not use these markers standalone for writing/coloring. They leave a rather scratchy line before the water is applied. The color brushes also do not expel much color when used after water on the page, so you have to wait for the water to dry a bit before reapplying. Lastly, the brush tips are in pretty good shape! A few came frayed, but they clump back together with use. I used the water brush a LOT and the hairs did not fray, even when I did long strokes. For beginners, this is definitely satisfactory. I am not sure how well they paint just yet, but they blend easy enough, and the colors are very vibrant. (Sidenote: Beware if you use masking tape! I used it to section off my squares, and the tape took off some sections of the paper with it. Nothing to do with the markers themselves, but be warned that after you complete your project, you run the risk of tearing it!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great brush pens! Actual brush tips!
Reviewed in Canada on July 5, 2023
This set has lots of vibrant colours to choose from. It's easy to dip the end in water to get muted colours, but they can be used without water. This is the only set I have found that has actual bristles for the brush (others seem to all be brush-shaped). I would definitely buy these again.
I'd prefer a couple more shades of red (there's only "red", "wine red" and "autumn red", but the autumn red is actually brown).

Daumen hoch!
