    Taotronics Earbuds
To be honest I wasn’t expecting much out of these earbuds but I may have been wrong. Initial fit in my ear was excellent with the preinstalled tips although they send quite a few in the box. My other set of earbuds are the Tozo T6 and I absolutely love them but the Taotronics actually fit a bit nicer. I chose the Tozo T6 partially due to the case size and shape but was pleasantly surprised by the size of this case. One thing I do appreciate about the T6 case is the 4 dot battery indicator light that lets me know when the case needs to be charged. That’s something I don’t see on the Taotronics.I was impressed with initial sound quality and will chime back in when I get some more seat time with these. I work a job at night where I listen to music or audiobooks for 2-3 hours per night so having something that fits nicely and sounds good is a priority.I’m unsure what battery life looks like but wouldn’t be surprised if they outlast my night job.Update 1/8/21: After using these for the week at my night job I've found things I both like and dislike.I was right and the battery life, at least while still this new, is excellent. They outlast the T6's after a combination of listening to music and talking on the phone for the last 5 nights. They still fit and sound great. Being able to summon Siri on command is nice since I still have not remembered the right combination of button pushes/presses to do so on the T6's.That being said the controls on these Taotronics can be cumbersome. I wish there was a single press to pause/play music instead of the double tap as I often don't get the timing right. If someone stops to talk to me while I'm working I end up fiddling with these to get them to stop playing so I can hear what's being said. I only wear one earbud at work because I prefer to be able to hear ambient noises for safety purposes. The good news is that these fit so well that if I were wearing both I doubt I would be able to hear anything else.I dislike how these pair with my phone. The initial pairing is great and super easy. If I pull both buds from the case and then return one it uses the same "Taotronics Soundliberty97" pairing. If I pull just the right bud out it made me pair just that one bud under "Taotronics Soundliberty 97 R" and I'm assuming the same would be true for the left bud but haven't tried just the left yet. While not a deal breaker it is slightly annoying to have "Taotronics Soundliberty..." listed thrice in my bluetooth list.My last complaint is about how these work with my bluetooth radio in my truck. It may simply be that my Pioneer bluetooth radio and these Toatronics don't play nice together as I haven't tried these with any of my other bluetooth devices/radios. I use my truck for work at night and am in and out of it every 15-30 minutes. Every time I crank my truck my phone auto-connects to my Pioneer radio. If I'm listening to music or talking on the phone I've noticed that almost every single time the Taotronics earbuds flip out and automatically disconnect and then attempt a reconnection which sometimes completely fails. Annoying if you're listening to music, aggravating if you're on a phone call. My T6's used to make this transition seamlessly but have started having the same problem recently but with a much better and quicker reconnection. That being said this may just be something that happens when trying the hand-off between that many bluetooth devices.

With reviews, I think it's important to establish who you are before you provide an opinion on something. For something like headphones you'll usually see tons of people that say "they sound great", but what they're not saying is that they also think that a walkman from the 90's sounds great. In order for an opinion on this subject to hold weight, the reviewer needs to know what they're talking about. For headphones, that would be me. I have a good ear for audio and I've also tested many sets of heaphones. Most recently I tested a few very cheap sets from Amazon as well as high-end sets like the Samsung Galaxy Buds+.

My overall impression of these Tao headphones is that they're excellent within their price point. It's hard to get a quality set of earbuds in the $50 range. Compared to other sets within this range, they are among the best. With that said, they're about 80% as good as a more expensive product like the Samsung Galaxy Buds+. Which is still very good considering the price gap between the headsets. For earbuds, there are four things that I like to investigate: Build Quality, Battery Life, Technology, and Device Support. So I'll cover each of these in reference to these Tao buds.

    Build Quality:

The buds themselves are light weight and fit well in your ear. They include 4 sets of ear tips and it's easy to find a tip that fits well for your ear's shape. Physically the buds feel high quality and would be hard to distinguish them side by side with a more expensive set. The case is noticeably lower quality. It lacks weight and is made of cheaper plastic. It doesn't have the same finish as a more expensive product. However it does it's job well and that's what ultimately matters at the end of the day.

    Battery Life:

These are advertised to have 9 hours of life between charges with the case supplying two full recharges. So a total of around 18 hours. In testing I was able to get around 8 hours with my OnePlus 8t smartphone. For battery life it's important that your device supports a modern version of Bluetooth. These buds will technically work with older versions of bluetooth, but you'll lose out on some of the energy efficiency that modern versions provide. This can impact the overall battery life of the buds. But overall their life is good. Only getting two recharges from the case is a little below average (and probably explains why the case is so light weight). However it's not horrible at this price point.

    Technology:

Tao doesn't list the driver size for these headphones. However they are using a Qualcomm chipset which is a big deal. Not all headphones support the same kind of bluetooth technologies. In the budget category, most support a type of connectivity called "SBS". This results in a fairly muddy sound and doesn't provide enough bandwidth to match what most people are accustomed to. These Tao headphones will work with devices that are limited to SBS, but they also support Qualcomm's APTX technology. This is a much higher bandwidth signal that results in higher audio quality. It's a noticeable upgrade from SBS transmissions. For comparison, these headphones have similar overall sound quality to a set of Apple's earpods. They won't blow your mind, but the sound is clear and is great for this price point. The bass isn't incredibly deep, but is definitely there without any major distortion.

    Device Support:

This part is somewhat a continuation of the last section because it comes down to the available technology. Many modern smartphones support APTX for bluetooth. If yours does, then you'll have a very decent audio experience. If your device is older or just doesn't support APTX, then you'll be limited to SBS. With that said, the fact that Tao supports both codecs provides a level of flexibility that just isn't normally found at this price point. Meaning that device support is above average.

    Conclusion:

As I said in the beginning, these headphones are really great within their price bracket. With that said, don't expect them to equal a more expensive pair. Options like the Samsung Galaxy Buds+ offer better overall build quality, more frequency range, and deeper bass. However, ironically the Tao buds beat the Samsung in terms of device support. Samsung uses a custom bluetooth codec that can only be experienced if you connect their buds to one of their devices. If you connect the Samsung buds to another brand, then you're limited to SBS. The Tao supports APTX across the board which means that it can actually beat the Samsungs on non-Samsung devices. So these end up being a very interesting option depending on what you're connecting them to. I've given them 5 stars as a comparison to other options in this price bracket. They'd be 3.5 stars if you're comparing them to every single option available at all price points.

When it comes to Bluetooth earbuds, there are so VERY many choices. As such, I spent ** many hours ** researching. And I don't limit myself to Amazon reviews - I check YouTube video reviews and I Google search. As I researched, I kept coming back to Taotronics (I saw positive reviews for previous iterations and for this current model, the Soundliberty 97). Bottomline: for the price, it was worth the risk. And if they didn't perform, I figured they'd be a relatively inexpensive back-up to another pair. But upon receiving & testing, they're a keeper!

Keep in mind, these are not Ap*le. They aren't B*se, nor are they So*y. As such, these should not be directly compared to those big names (just as you wouldn't directly compare a Family Sedan to a Sportscar). In this arena, price & the value of what you receive (price compared to performance) should be your evaluation criteria.

Note: I bought these mainly for music, podcasts and listening to the radio on my iPhone & MacBook Air (I'm not currently a Bluetooth-earbud-using-a-cell-phone type of person).

    What I like:
    (1) Nice *little* charging cradle (pocket-sized), though with my large hands it was initially difficult to get them out of the magnetized charging cradle slots.

    (2) EASY pairing - they turned on when I opened the cradle. I then immediately opened Bluetooth on my iPhone XR, I selected Taotronics, and within approximately 30-seconds from starting this process a voice in each earbud told me they were [both] successfully paired. Pairing could not have been easier - nothing complicated, and no real set-up.

    (3) Sound: much better than I expected (no loss of clarity with increasing volume).

    (4) Bluetooth/Wireless range: very, very good ... I can walk several rooms away from my iPh and I still have a signal - no loss of my music.

    (5) Controlling functions, by taping the earbuds, is fairly easy & intuitive (it's not instantaneous, there is a slight delay so don't be impatient & wait 1 to 1.5 seconds for the command function to execute).

    (6) You can wear one earbud - either earbud (some brands require you to wear both or require that you wear the left earbud).

    (7) You cannot beat the price ... I could buy (4) sets of these to one Ap*le brand.

    What could be better:
    (1) Bass: it's fine, but for those he like more bass/deeper bass, you'll likely be disappointed.

    (2) Noise Canceling: they are listed as Active Noise Canceling (ANC). If you look closely near the middle of the Amazon page (in the Comparison Table - where they compare these to similar products with different branding), under "Special Features" they are listed as "noise isolation". Just below that under "Product Description", they are listed as having "active voice enhancement & background noise suppression" (that's ANC).

I'm not a techie, and I won't get too deep, but NOISE ISOLATION is ** passive ** whereas NOISE CANCELING is ** active ** (there is also "HYBRID NOISE CANCELING technology, but you'll need to spend over $100 for that).

My point: noise "isolation" is more about "fit" and how well noise is blocked simply by the physical apparatus (ear fins) filling the ear canal to block noise from entering one's ear. "Active" noise canceling uses the microphone to monitor background noise, and a secondary or counter-noise is created to offset the background. True "active noise canceling" requires a capable microphone.

    ** Full Disclosure **
I haven't tried these yet on an airplane (I'm not traveling due to COVID-19) and it's winter so I'm not mowing my lawn. As such, the jury is still out whether these are true ANC. From appearances and everyday use, I believe they are more noise isolation than noise canceling BUT (I know everybody says this but few actually do it) - I plan to update my review once I make a final determination. But I can safely say that the "noise canceling" could be better (but likely not much, if any, at this price point).

    In summary:
A sportscar will undoubtedly go 0 to 60 MPH faster than your family sedan, it takes longer BUT the family sedan will reach 60 MPH (it just won't reach 150 MPH like a sportscar). If you want the best technology in true wireless earbuds, you'll need to spend MUCH more money than the Taotronics ($150 - $300). But that does not mean the Taotronics Soundliberty 97 cannot do the job and do it well, especially at this price point. If you want reasonable performing earbuds for the price ... if you are new to earbuds and you wish to try them ... or if you're the type of person who buys less expensive sunglasses because you lose sunglasses - well, you cannot go wrong buying this product. And they have an 18-month warranty from the manufacturer. That is peace of mind.

If I were to reduce this lengthy review to two words, I'd select "try them" or "worth it".
