I am an academic writer, so I spend my day typing. I suffer from a lot of pain on my wrist, which was seriously minimized since I started using ergonomic keyboards 6 years ago. I started with the simpler versions sold by Microsoft and was faithful to my Microsoft Sculpt for four years after that. The sculpt is a great option and I would buy it again, but it is pricey. This mechanical version has an even more comfortable design and the keys are slightly deep, but they do not offer resistance, making them super comfortable. The bulky and big part is another feature that I love. I have enough space between keys and a strong keyboard to support my wrists. Microsoft also added extra subtle curves from the front to the back part of the keyboard (in addition to the dent) and I am loving that as it decreases the tension on my wrists even more (my hands do not have to go up and down as much to reach certain keys). In addition to that, no more concerns about replacing batteries and producing more garbage/spending more money. I am sure I will settle for this keyboard for as long as it lasts or, at least, until Microsoft releases and backlit ergonomic keyboard.
I have a Logitech Ergo that was a gift and I consider this Microsoft ergonomic keyboard way better, considering that the Ergo keys offer more resistance, which I do not like, in addition to the annoying noise.
Important: the keyboard comes with a riser for the front part. I struggled a lot to find this info.
ORIGINAL REVIEW APRIL 2023: I thought I would hate this keyboard. I wanted to hate this keyboard. I was so used to and so loved the previous version that I was bound to hate it so I thought. Well, I did a bit at first. But I soon realized overall the new version was 95 percent as good.
The main problem will be an adjustment period because the layout of the keys has changed in some cases. Also there are some new keys which I don't really know what they do because I really don't use them. You won't need to in fact. Yes, these facts are annoying especially to someone like me who hates change to something that fits under the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" saying. Eventually however you will adjust in a reasonably short period of time as almost all the keys you normally used are pretty much in the same layout as before.
That all being said there is one big exception for me. The left side SHIFT CAPS TAB keys just seem off to me still and I've been using the keyboard for weeks now. I too often hit the CAPS key and lock on captials which is very annoying especially when typing in passwords. To be honest this would happen with the previous version, too, but it seems to happen much more often with this version. Also the "Windows symbol key" which you hit to bring up the start menu is off which put the left side ALT button off as well. This is much more annoying than the CAPS key and I still am not 100 percent used to the change. It is because they add in a new key which bring up the menu you get when you hit the right mouse button. I didn't need nor want this new key. I'd rather just right click my mouse button as it ruins the previously perfect alignment of the left side CTRL WINDOWS ALT keys on the previous keyboard. But I think in time I will eventually get used to it.
One huge positive over the previous keyboard which surpirsed me was the weight and bulk. The new version is light as a feather and less bulky than the old version which actually was a very pleasant surprise. I am happy about that change. Another positive is the ergonomic design and feel aspect is just as good, maybe even better than the previous version.
So, the bottom line: I still prefer the old version but I have adjusted to the new one overall. 95 percent of the time you will be satisfied in my estimate. Change of an item you love stinks but if you are forced to this keyboard is an acceptable alternative.
I also have the discontinued model that I still use in office. Comparing both models, this new one is a little more quiet when typing, and overall width is a tiny bit shorter. There is an added Lock key to lock keyboard when I step away, easier than pressing Windows+L. Since the function keys have their own row, there is no Function Lock key anymore.
Some reviews commented an added Delete key right above the backspace key, that could accidentally delete stuff. I have no problem with it coz, first it is located at the top row with the function keys, my fingers can't reach that far during normal typing. Second, you have to highlight the content first, then press Delete. Otherwise, it won't delete anything. The wrist pad is bigger than the old model and it is more comfortable and great quality.
Some also commented an added key between Ctrl and Windows key on left hand side. I get used to it in just a few days and find it pretty handy actually coz you can just hit that key versus reaching out to right-click the mouse!
The only cons I would say are, there is no riser legs underneath the keyboard except the riser that comes with it. And just like the old model, since the 9-key cannot be detached, I need to reach farther right to reach for my mouse. I sometimes move the keyboard away so I can move the mouse closer to me. Other than that, I don't care about the emoji key :) I highly recommend this keyboard and for an affordable price!
