From the manufacturer
Can you brew coffee grounds or single-serve pods?
You can do both. This FlexBrew comes with everything you need to brew a single-serve pod, or your own grounds.
How do I connect my FlexBrew to Amazon Dash Replenishment?
To get started, download the HB Connect app and pair your device with the coffee maker over your home WiFi.
Do I have to order the same single-serve coffee pods each time?
No. You can change your order setup and choose your favorite from a variety of single-serve pods.
How long does brewing take?
Brewing your single serving takes about 3 minutes. While some coffee makers brew faster, the FlexBrew’s process creates a better-tasting cup of coffee when brewing on Bold. Plus, it uses less energy by only heating water when you’re ready to brew.
How often should I clean the coffee maker?
We recommend descaling the coffee maker and cleaning out the pack-piercing needle once a month. Both these steps are easy and included in a use and care guide. All you need is vinegar and water to descale, and a bent paperclip to clean the needle.

My faithful old drip coffeemaker finally gasped its last breath and I had to replace it. I'm a senior citizen living on social security so I set out on a quest for both a coffeemaker and coffee that would give me the best taste at an affordable price. Not an easy task. As an old dog reluctant to learn new tricks, I swallowed hard and decided to *gulp* take the plunge to pod coffee. I scoured all the Amazon reviews and I ended up ordering the Hamilton Beach FlexBrew (and then I set out to find decaf coffee pods).
I looked at several different brands. models and types of coffee makers and quickly realized that the prices are tiered in sort of a snobbery hierarchy. Kind of like Mercedes down to Chevrolets down to Kias. But aha!! Because I had previously shopped just as carefully for my car and ended up with an awesome, dependable and comfortable Kia that I love that I wouldn't trade for the most expensive Mercedes there is, I'm smart enough to understand the difference between name, price, value, and satisfaction. So right off the bat I crossed the expensive snob brand (that starts with a "K") off my list. I'm not paying for a name, I'm paying for features and ultimately for a great cup of coffee. Then I started searching and reading reviews of the other "tiers" of pod coffee makers and coffee.
When I came across this Hamilton Beach FlexBrew Connected Single Cup Coffee Maker at first I thought there must be something wrong with it because the price was so low compared with that of other brands with similar features. But then I read the solid reviews, most of which were 5 stars. The vast majority of buyers were not only very satisfied, most seemed to love it. When I went through the list of specifications it seemed to have everything I was looking for. So I took the plunge and ordered it (along with SF Bay French Roast Dark Decaf coffee pods which I ordered elsewhere on Amazon).
I received the coffee machine within 2 days with my Prime account. The unpacking and setup was straightforward. I actually followed the recommendations that came with the instructions, and I washed each of the parts in soapy water, rinsed well and let them air dry before assembling them -- which was very easy. I read the instructions (which I HIGHLY recommend anyone do before complaining that something didn't work right). Seemed simple enough. I pre-soaked the water filter as recommended and inserted it into the reservoir, which I then filled with cold tap water. My coffee pods that I had ordered had not yet arrived, so I first tried out the coffee machine with the optional ground coffee basket that was provided and used the Folger's brand decaf that I had been using in my old coffee maker. I used the BOLD setting fo a 10 oz cup. My hot coffee was ready in three minutes and right away I could tell the difference before even tasting it. The aroma was wonderful, and when I took a sip I couldn't believe the difference that the brewer made, even with the same coffee I had been previously using.
But the next day I received my SF Bay French Roast dark decaf coffee pods that I had ordered from Amazon and tried one of those. And I'm not exaggerating, I was grinning from ear to ear I was so happy! FINALLY a truly great cup of coffee that reminded me of my pre-decaf days. Rich, bold, full bodied, so tasty and hot. And no daily cleanup, just remove and toss the pod until time for a monthly machine cleaning. The combination of the Hamilton Beach FlexBrew machine and the SF Bay French Roast Decaf is a winner for me, and the combination of the two = one of the best purchases I've made in a long time. I can't recommend the coffee maker highly enough.
Oh just one thing I might add. The model I bought (the Hamilton Beach 49968 FlexBrew Connected Single Cup Coffee Maker with Amazon Dash Auto Replenishment) can connect to your home wifi, and it can keep track of how much coffee you use and automatically order more when it thinks you're getting low. While I did set it up for my home wifi and connected it to the Hamilton Beach Android app on my mobile phone, I opted not to use the automatic replenishment as I prefer to order my coffee manually. YMMV.
1. The Kuerig has a power on switch, but HB does not. It only heats up when you hit brew. This will take longer for that second cup of coffee, but saves energy.
2. My Kuerig had three volume selections, 6, 8, and 10 oz. The HB sizes are 8, 10, and 14 oz.
3. Somehow, with the HB unit, I cannot get the needle to punch a hole in the bottom of K-cups when I push down on the handle. I have needed to pull out the receiving cup and press down the K-cup. It has been easy and no problem, just different.
4. The water reservoir is smaller that the Kuerig I had, but can produce three cups.
5. My wife makes a hot apple cider using K-cups. She says the HB unit more thoroughly uses the contents and tastes better.
6. I would have give HB five stars, except for the filter design. I could not get the filter holder to engage with the outlet in the reservoir. I just won't be using it. I fill the reservoir from the refrigerator water dispenser, which is filtered water. The design of this reservoir filter on the HB unit is flawed.
7. The HB unit has a built in means to use ground coffee, which the Kuerig does not. However, I have a reuseable cup that I used in the Kuerig and the HB unit.
Overall, I like the Hamilton Beach coffee maker. Now, if it lasts more than two years, maybe I'll give five stars.
